Pirate Choppers
Tortuga BVI was the most infamous of all the port-of-calls for the sixteenth century pirates
sailing the Spanish Mane. It was a location of safe haven for ships and crews
that attacked merchant vessels throughout the Caribbean using the skull and crossbones
flag, "The Jolly Roger". The harbor has deep water and a shoreline to protect
moored ships. The pubs and brothels were full of men with dubious work histories
and even taller tales....just the place to find crews to join the pirate lifestyle.
Sir Henry Morgan, possibly more famous by his namesake rum, is the most famous
pirate captain to call this small port home. In midst career of plundering and
pillaging....England captured Captain Morgan and returned him to England. The
King promptly knighted the pirate captain and returned him to the Caribbean as
the governor of Jamaica entrusting him with ridding the area of...yes, pirates.
This irony, still today, is of myth and legend. It is in "Tortuga BVI where choppers...Pirate
Choppers are born.
